Genetic tests built to reach everyone.

Inherited disorders are written in DNA. Lightening Lives develops REASSURED genetic tests that read it: simple, affordable and usable outside specialised laboratories, so molecular diagnosis can reach the people who need it most.

DNA is written in four letters: A, T, G and C. The strand is built from them.

A model of a strand of DNA built from small card tiles, each printed with one of the letters A, T, G or C. The tiles climb round the strand like the steps of a spiral stair and fade into the distance.
What we test for

Tell us the condition. We develop the test.

We develop genetic tests for any inherited condition. The five we have made so far each began with a programme that needed one, and the next place on the strand is open.

  • Sickle cell anaemia
  • Thalassaemia
  • Spinal muscular atrophy
  • Duchenne muscular dystrophy
  • Blood coagulation disorders
  • Any other, on request

Further along the strand, five tiles have turned over to sun yellow, each with a paper sun behind it, one for each test developed so far. Nearest of all, one tile has turned over blank, with only the outline of a sun: the place open for the next.
What stands behind them

Every test is held to one published standard.

REASSURED is a published set of criteria for diagnostics that work in low-resource settings, and developing genetic tests that meet it is what we do best. LitLife™-SCA, our flagship test for sickle cell anaemia, is validated by ICMR.

  • Validated by ICMR
  • MOU with CSIR-CCMB
  • Built for national programmes

Reading a gene used to take a specialised laboratory.

Genetic tests have traditionally needed large equipment, specialised laboratories and trained staff, so they rarely reach the people who need them most. We design ours the other way round.

  1. Collect

A few drops of blood on a card. A dried blood spot is simple and minimally invasive to collect.

  2. Process

No separate DNA extraction step. The workflow is automation-friendly, suits high-throughput screening and needs minimal laboratory infrastructure.

  3. Read

Results come back quickly, and our tests are designed so that reading them doesn't call for specialised training.

The result is genetic testing that is scalable and affordable enough for large public health programmes.

A test for any inherited condition, developed for the programme that needs it.

These are the tests we have developed so far. Each began with an institution's requirement, and the next can begin with yours.

Our flagship · Sickle cell anaemia

LitLife™-SCA

A simple dried blood spot test for detecting sickle cell anaemia, developed for the National Sickle Cell Anaemia Elimination Mission.

  • Validated by ICMR
  • MOU with CSIR-CCMB
  • Dried blood spot sample

In India, sickle cell disease is most common among tribal communities. The Government of India launched the Elimination Mission in July 2023, aiming to eliminate the disease as a public health problem by 2047.

  • The condition you need next

Tell us what your programme needs to screen for. We develop the test, to the same REASSURED standard as the five here.

    Tell us what you need
  • Thalassaemia

Carriers are usually healthy and often unaware of their status. Genetic testing supports carrier screening, diagnosis and family counselling.

  • Spinal muscular atrophy

Treatments work best when started early, ideally before symptoms appear. Our dried blood spot test is adaptable and affordable for large-scale newborn screening.

  • Duchenne muscular dystrophy

Diagnosis often comes late. An earlier genetic diagnosis allows timely care, and lets families find out whether relatives are carriers.

  • Blood coagulation disorders

In bleeding disorders such as haemophilia, genetic testing confirms the diagnosis, identifies carriers and supports family counselling and care planning.

Nine more letters: the standard every test is held to.

REASSURED is a published set of criteria for diagnostic tests that work in low-resource settings. Developing genetic tests that meet it is what we do best.

  1. Real-time connectivity

Results can be read or shared digitally with decision-makers.

  2. Ease of specimen collection

Samples are simple and minimally invasive to collect.

  3. Affordable

Affordable for the people tested and for the health system.

  4. Sensitive

    Few false negatives.

  5. Specific

    Few false positives.

  6. User-friendly

Simple to perform, with minimal training.

  7. Rapid and robust

Quick results; tests survive transport and storage without special conditions.

  8. Equipment-free or simple

No special equipment, or only simple devices.

  9. Deliverable to end-users

Reaches the people who need it most.

What we say, and what stands behind it.

LitLife™-SCA detects sickle cell anaemia from a dried blood spot.
The test is validated by the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR).
The science is built with a national research laboratory.
An MOU with the CSIR-Centre for Cellular and Molecular Biology (CCMB), Hyderabad, covers developing and commercialising the sickle cell assay.
Our tests are made for public health programmes.
They were developed for Government of India health programmes, including the National Sickle Cell Anaemia Elimination Mission.
They are manufactured to a quality standard.
Production is by a third-party manufacturer that holds a quality certification.
They have been used in the field.

We work with institutions, and most of that work starts as a collaboration.

Tests are supplied in bulk to institutions and government programmes. We don't test individuals.

  • Hospitals, laboratories and clinicians

Genetic tests for inherited conditions, designed to need minimal laboratory infrastructure and to suit an automated workflow.

  • District health officers and government programmes

Tests developed for national health programmes, for screening whole populations.

  • NGOs and CSR funders

A technology partner for large, population-level screening.

Awareness and counselling, alongside the tests

A result helps only when people understand it. We run awareness and counselling programmes, mostly on behalf of the government: explaining inherited conditions and screening to communities, and helping families understand results and carrier status.

For individuals

Looking for a test for yourself or your family? We supply institutions only. Please speak to your doctor or visit your nearest government health facility.
